Higher education in Tunisia

Let's start with some interesting data collected by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and published in a 2023 report by the World Economic Forum.

According to this data, tertiary students in Malaysia and Tunisia are among the most likely to graduate in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields - 43.5 graduates per 1000 in Malaysia and 37.9 graduates per 1000 in Tunisia receive related degrees .

STEM is a model that integrates science and engineering subjects into a single system. Disciplines are taught from the point of view of connection with each other. This allows us to consider and solve problems more comprehensively, and not in the context of one area of science or technology.

After Tunisia, the share of STEM degree recipients is also high (above 29%) in Algeria, Mauritania and Morocco, all thanks to the popularity of computer engineering in the region. The Arab Gulf is a place that has been keen to innovate its economy in recent times, with some regions, namely the UAE and Oman, producing significant numbers of students in STEM fields.

Tunisia has a compact but well-prepared network of 310 higher education institutions, including 229 in the public sector. In total, there are 13 state universities and 203 educational institutes in the country.

The "écoles" schools have a particular reputation in Tunisia, offering a three-year engineering course after a two-year "preparatory class". Overall, the Tunisian education system enjoys a good reputation on the African continent.

With the exception of study programs in engineering, architecture and medicine, the study programs comply with the Bologna standard (LMD system). The languages of instruction are predominantly French, Arabic and, slightly less frequently, English.

If you are considering academic study in Tunisia, you will need a good command of one of these languages. In my next posts, I will share with you the necessary information for admission to the University. In the meantime, I propose to focus on researching each educational institution separately.

And we will start with Tunis El Manar University.

It occupies an honorable 1st place in the rankings of higher educational institutions in Tunisia. The university was founded in 1987 under the name "University of Sciences, Technology and Medicine of Tunisia". And it received its current name in 2000.

El Manar University offers a wide range of programs in law, literature, environmental sciences, medicine, economics, engineering and technology, natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, and information technology.
